PID – Treat Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Naturally

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) has deprived a lot of women from getting pregnant even in Nigeria

The good news is…

You can learn how to treat PID naturally and take charge of your health and fertility

In this article, I will be sharing with you everything you need to know about the natural PID treatment including the causes and symptoms of PID

What is PID?

Pelvic inflammatory disease, often called PID is one of the major causes of infertility in women. PID is an infection of the female reproductive organs, including the womb, fallopian tubes and the ovaries.

What usually happen is that bacteria enters into the vagina to cause an infection, as time goes on, this infection can spread into the pelvic organs (which include the uterus, fallopian tubes and the ovaries) and damage the pelvic organs beyond repair.

Pelvic Inflammatory disease may be described as acute or chronic

Acute PID comes on suddenly and are often more severe, while chronic PID is a second-rate infection that may cause only mild pain and sometimes backache.

When pelvic inflammatory disease occurs, it can cause inflammation of the:

  1. uterus lining (endometrium)
  2. fallopian tubes
  3. tissue around the uterus
  4. ovaries
  5. peritoneum: the inside lining of the abdomen

In addition, abscesses (pocket of pus or fluid caused by the infection), can also develop in the ovaries and fallopian tubes

It is important to take measures against PID on time as it can become extremely dangerous or even life threatening especially when it spreads into the blood.

Causes of PID

The major cause of PID is bacteria.

Usually, the cervix is meant to prevent bacteria that enters the vagina from spreading in to the pelvic organs.

However, when the cervix is exposed to certain bacteria including the same bacteria that cause the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) gonorrhea and chlamydia, the cervix itself will then become infected and wont be able to perform its work of preventing bacteria from travelling into the pelvic organs.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease occurs when the bacteria travels unrestricted from the vagina through the cervix to the upper genital tract.

Generally, the following are causes of PID

Sexually transmitted Infections (STIs)

About 25% of PID cases are caused by STIs especially chlamydia and gonorrhea.

PID caused by chlamydia is the most common and it often has no symptoms making it difficult to diagnose.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV):

This is one of the major causes of Vaginal Infection popularly referred to as Toilet Infection in Nigeria.

Bacterial vaginosis is a situation in which the good bacteria in the vagina becomes low and unable to balance the bad bacteria in the vagina. When this happens, the bad bacteria can spread into the uterus and fallopian tubes to cause PID.

In other words, untreated toilet infection (vaginal infection) can cause pelvic inflammatory disease

Intrauterine Devices

When there is infection in the vagina or the cervix is infected, inserting an IUD at that point in time can cause PID.

Other causes

Some other causes of PID include

  • Damage to the cervix as a result of abortion, childbirth or miscarriage
  • Procedure that involves the opening of the cervix such as abortion, inspection of the womb etc.

Risk Factors for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Any woman can get PID, but it is more likely you get it if you:

  • are having more than one sexual partner
  • have a new sexual partner
  • are having sex without a condom
  • are douching
  • have a history of STIs
  • have had PID in the past
  • are under 25
  • started having sex at a young age

How to Lower the Risk of PID

You can lower your risk of PID by:

  • practicing safe sex
  • going for test to rule out sexually transmitted infections
  • avoiding douches
  • making sure you wipe from front to back after using the bathroom to prevent bacteria from entering your vagina

Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Some women with pelvic inflammatory disease don’t have symptoms. For the women who do have symptoms, these can include:

  • dull and crampy or constant pain in the lower abdomen (the most common symptom). This pain may get worse during bowel movement, when you are urinating or during sexual intercourse.
  • pain in the lower back which sometimes spreads down one or both legs.
  • heavy periods/painful periods
  • painful sex
  • burning or pain when you urinate.
  • bleeding after sex and between periods (irregular menstrual bleeding)
  • increased, foul smelling or unusual vaginal discharge especially discharge that is yellow, brown, or green
    tiredness
  • A feeling of pressure in the pelvis
  • fever

However, some women becomes ill with symptoms such as:

  • severe pain in the lower abdomen
  • nausea and vomiting
  • fainting
  • a high temperature (fever)

If you don’t treat your PID, your symptoms can worsen and lead to problems, such as:

  1. Infertility: inability to conceive a child
  2. Ectopic pregnancy: pregnancy that occurs outside the womb
  3. Fallopian tube blockage
  4. Chronic pelvic pain: pain in the lower abdomen caused by scarring of the fallopian tubes and other pelvic organs
  5. Tubo-ovarian and pelvic abscess
  6. Frozen pelvis
  7. Fitz Hugh Curtis syndrome
  8. Septicaemia (Infection of the blood)
  9. Sexual Dysfunction
  10. Heart Attack

The longer treatment is delayed, the more likely you are to have permanent damage. Early diagnosis and treatment is important especially for the preservation of fertility

At this point, one may ask, does PID only occur in women? The answer is actually YES simply because men don’t have fallopian tubes, ovaries or uterus. However, It is worth noting that while men cannot have PID, they can still contract sexually transmitted infections, including urethritis, orchitis, or prostatitis.

Both partners should be tested for infections and treated accordingly.
